Chris Thompson, Director of SSC and Certification Officer

Chris Thompson is the director of the Student Success Center for the College of Education. As well as acting as SSC director, Chris also serves as a certification officer, able to aid Georgia Southern graduates in obtaining their teacher certification from the Professional Standard Commission. Chris has been at Georgia Southern for the past thirteen years. In addition to currently being a GSU 1210 instructor, Chris is also a Georgia Southern alumnus. She graduated with her undergraduate degree from here in 1998 and went on to receive her Master’s degree in Counseling Education-Higher Education Student Services in 2004. Chris is originally from the state of Pennsylvania, but currently lives in city of Sylvania with her husband and three children, Danny, Jack, and Tara.

 

Gloria Martin, Administrative Secretary

Gloria Martin is the Administrative Secretary of the College of Education’s Student Success Center. Gloria has been a member of the Georgia Southern faculty for over thirteen years. She is the first of many smiling faces you will see when you visit the SSC. Among Gloria’s many daily duties, she is responsible for keeping the COE’s Student Success Center offices running smoothly. Gloria is a great person to help you with any questions you may have and is sure to keep you well informed and greatly entertained with her wonderful sense of humor whenever you visit our offices.

 

Earnestine Burns, Academic Advisor

Earnestine Burns is an Academic Advisor in the College of Education’s Student Success Center. Earnestine received her Bachelors in Business Administration from Georgia Southern. For several years following her graduation in 1991, she worked as an Administrative Coordinator in the Georgia Southern Registrar’s Office. Earnestine left Georgia Southern in 1998 to work at the Georgia Institute of Technology as an academic advisor. In June of 2005, Earnestine returned to Georgia Southern as an Academic Advisor here at the SSC. She advises Early Childhood Education students who are not yet in the Teacher Education Program. Earnestine also advises upper division Middle Grade students, as well as Business Education and Technology Education majors.

Laura Saunders, Academic Advisor

Laura Saunders is an Academic Advisor in the College of Education’s Student Success Center. Laura has been a member of the Georgia Southern faculty for the past fourteen years.  Twelve of those fourteen years, she worked as an Admissions Counselor in the Office of Admissions before joining the College of Education’s Student Success Center office. Laura acts as an advisor to all lower division Middle Grade Education majors, as well as those majoring in Secondary Education here at GSU. Laura, herself, is a Georgia Southern alumni, having received her Bachelor’s of Science degree in 1995, in addition to her Master’s degree in Public Administration in 2005. Laura is married with two children, Ben and Allison, and has lived in Statesboro for the past fifteen years since coming here to join the Georgia Southern faculty in 1991.

The SSC provides services to students, the College of Education, and the University.

Some of these services include:

  • Certification advice and aid to qualified students seeking teacher certification. 
  • Assessment of students’ compliance with course prerequisite policies, GPA standards, state certification guidelines and University requirements for graduation.
  • Scholarship opportunities for students.
  • Retention of student and timely progression.
  • Connection with faculty, administrators, and staff within the College of Education and across campus in order to maintain ongoing lines of communication to meet student needs.
  • Advisement of students on course selection, program requirements and registration throughout their undergraduate careers.
  • Development of students as they progress through their academic careers.
  • Recruitment of students to careers in education and to Georgia Southern University.
