The Counselor Education Program at Georgia Southern University is a full-time residential program offered on the Statesboro campus with two concentrations: School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Why Study Counselor Education at Georgia Southern University?
- The focus of the Counselor Education program is on training professional counselors.
- The Counselor Education concentrations in School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling, have been CACREP (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) accredited since January 2009.
- Courses are taught by Counselor Education Faculty on campus using an experiential focus with implications for real-world practice.

The Counselor Education Program prepares students to practice as professional counselors and to become leaders and advocates committed to professional and personal growth, ethical practice, and social justice in clinical mental health, higher education, and school settings. Graduates are reflective, dedicated professionals committed to meeting the needs of a diverse population and pluralistic society. The Counselor Education Program is committed to the preparation and continual development of counselors-in-training and professional counselors.
Counseling Programs
Depending on your experience, you can pursue one of two graduate school options. If you have a bachelor’s degree, take a look at the Master’s of Education in Counseling Education.
There are two degree concentrations offered in the Master of Education in Counselor Education program. Concentration One, School Counseling and Concentration Two, Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Both concentrations are offered in a hybrid format on the Statesboro campus. See details from the following links:
- School Counseling, M.Ed. 60 hours – This concentration is designed for people who wish to work as school counselors. The concentration is designed for graduate students to meet the requirements for school counseling certification in Georgia.
- Clinical Mental Health Counseling, M.Ed. 60 hours This concentration is designed for people who wish to work as clinical mental health counselors in community agency settings (public, private, or non-profit).

Professional License/Certification Disclosure
The M.Ed. Counselor Education program has two concentrations: Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling. Both concentrations are accredited by CACREP (the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs). The Department of Leadership, Technology, and Human Development anticipates that graduates of the M.Ed. Counselor Education – School Counseling Concentration will be eligible to seek professional certification by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission as a certified School Counselor (P-12).
The Department of Leadership, Technology, and Human Development has determined the required classes and educational activities of these academic programs will qualify a graduate of this program to take the GACE exam for School Counselor (P-12) certification in Georgia. The department has not determined whether this program satisfies the requirements of all states and territories for School Counseling certification.
The Department of Leadership, Technology, and Human Development anticipates that graduates of the M.Ed. Counselor Education – Clinical Mental Health Counseling Concentration may become a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Georgia upon finishing additional requirements for NCC and LPC.
The Department of Leadership, Technology, and Human Development has determined the required classes and educational activities of these academic programs will qualify a graduate of this program to seek National Certified Counselor (NCC) and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) upon finishing additional requirements for NCC and LPC. The department has not determined whether this program satisfies the requirements of all states and territories for Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
Professional Certification Disclosure
The College of Education anticipates that graduates of the Counselor Education Certification program will seek state licenses or certifications.
