Jack Miller Faculty Awards
Overview
The purpose of the Jack Miller Faculty Awards is to recognize and reward faculty for demonstrated excellence in the areas of teaching, service and/or scholarship. The awards are determined by a faculty member's performance based on specific criteria. If no faculty member meets those criteria for a given period of review, an award will not be made.
The competition is open to all full-time, tenure-track, COE faculty who have completed at least three (3) years of full-time, tenure-track service at Georgia Southern University. All nominations are made by sending the name of the nominee to the Dean's office (person responsible for receiving nomination will be indicated by the dean in the call for nomination announcement). There is no predetermined number of candidates. Any qualified faculty member may submit credentials. The credentials of all candidates will be reviewed by the Tenure, Promotion, and Welfare Committee and voting will be done independently by secret ballot. In the case of a tie the dean will cast the deciding vote.
While any faculty member may be entered into competition for any/all award categories, winners of the Jack Miller College Educator of the Year Award become ineligible for the other smaller awards for the period of review. If a candidate submits his/her credentials for only the Jack Miller Educator of the Year Award and does not win in that category, the committee reserves the right to award that faculty member one of the three area awards. Winners of any of the four awards become ineligible for that award for a period of three years.
The Jack Miller Award for Service, the Jack Miller Award for Teaching, the Jack Miller Award for Scholarship and Creative Activity, and the Jack Miller Educator of the Year Award are based on performance over a three-year period.
