Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) for Graduate Students

WHAT GRADUATE PROGRAMS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION?

DOES THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION OFFER ANY ALTERNATIVE TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAMS FOR PEOPLE WHO DID NOT GET AN UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE IN EDUCATION BUT WHO NOW WISH TO OBTAIN A TEACHING CERTIFICATE?
Yes. The College of Education offers alternative preparation programs for many certification fields. Students wishing to obtain their first teaching certificate in a field can contact the Student Success Center, for instructions on the transcript evaluation requirement and available alternative programs including the Master of Arts in Teaching.

HOW MANY HOURS ARE YOUR MASTER OF EDUCATION (M.ED.) PROGRAMS?
Standard M.Ed. programs are 36 graduate semester hours. Alternative M.Ed. programs may require additional prerequisite coursework. Each applicant's transcript must be evaluated individually for the Alternative M.Ed. programs (see question above).

HOW MANY HOURS ARE YOUR EDUCATIONAL SPECIALIST (ED.S.) PROGRAMS?
Ed. S. degree programs range from 30-36 graduate semester hours.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATE PROGRAMS IN THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION?
Entrance requirements depend upon the degree and program selected. Students may select either the GRE (Graduate Record Exam) or the MAT (Miller's Analogy Test) entrance exams. Refer to the Georgia Southern Testing Center for information on entrance exams offered on campus. Refer to the links to degrees on the opening page of the College of Education's website for admission requirements for graduate programs in the College of Education. Admission requirements are also listed in the University's Course Catalog.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR GRADUATE STUDY IN THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AT GEORGIA SOUTHERN?
Complete the online application for admission at http://cogs.georgiasouthern.edu/future_students/adprocedures.html. For answers to questions regarding graduate admission applications, contact the Admissions Office at 912-478-5384.

WHAT TYPE OF FINANCIAL AID IS AVAILABLE FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS?
Check with the Office of Financial Aid at (912) 478-5413 for complete financial aid information including loans, grants, and scholarships. Students pursuing graduate degrees in critical need areas of education may be eligible for the HOPE Teacher Scholarship Program.

HOW DO I FIND OUT WHO MY GRADUATE ADVISOR IS AND HOW TO CONTACT HER/HIM?
Your acceptance letter from the Admissions Office should indicate an advisor for your program and contain contact information. You may also call the College of Education at 912-478-5648 to obtain contact information for graduate advisors.

ARE THE TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMS AT GEORGIA SOUTHERN ACCREDITED, AND IF SO BY WHAT AGENCIES?
Georgia Southern University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to award Associate, Bachelor, Master, Specialist, and Doctorate degrees. In addition, the College of Education's programs are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GAPSC).

I HAVE COMPLETED MY GRADUATE DEGREE AND NEED TO UPGRADE MY TEACHING CERTIFICATE. WHAT FORMS DO I NEED AND HOW/WHERE DO I SUBMIT THEM?
If you already possess Georgia certification (Teaching, Service, or Leadership) and you have completed all requirements for an advanced degree which makes you eligible for an upgraded certificate, you should obtain a forms packet called "The Application Package" from the Director of SSC and Certification Officer in Room 1107 of the Education Building, phone: (912) 478-0698. You may also download a copy of the forms directly from the Professional Standards Commission web site.

Complete the forms, following the instructions provided, and submit them to the Office of the Registrar at Georgia Southern, along with a Transcript Request Form. Note on the application whether you wish the forms to be sent from Georgia Southern to your school system, or directly to the Professional Standards Commission. Please allow 6-8 weeks for paperwork to be processed by all parties.
