Educational Leadership

GENERAL BACKGROUND

Dr. Chance, a native of West Tennessee, has spent her entire career with a focus on school renewal especially as it pertains to children from underserved groups.  Her interest in this area arises from her background.  Though neither of her parents had more than an 8th grade education, education was highly valued in her home and no excuses were valid when it came to not achieving in school.  The family lived by the belief that hard work, a good education and focused goals were the keys to success.  Any successes she has experienced result from that family philosophy.

Dr. Chance is also passionate that school renewal must expand to include a global perspective.   Education focused only on state and national standards is not sufficient for forward thinking school leaders.  We must broaden our perspectives if the US is to maintain its role as one of the world leaders.  As evidence of this passion, Dr. Chance has been accepted as a Fulbright Specialist, has been involved in education preparation work in the UK and China, and is presently involved in education policy research in the UK, China, the US, and Canada.  She will be teaching fall 2009 at Huazhong Normal University and working in their P-12 partner schools.

 PERSONAL INFORMATION:

Dr. Chance has one daughter and son-in-law, both of whom work at Western Kentucky University.  Ashley teaches American Sign Language and works with First Year Experience, while Scott works in IT.

Hobbies: Antique Cars, Collecting/Selling Antique Furniture, Junking, and Travel
