Language and Freshman Year Intervention (FYI)

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) seeks an individual to be responsible for coordinating all Learning Resources Center (LRC) academic activities that support English-as-a-second language (ESL) learners and those in the undergraduate foreign language curriculum. Specific duties include: selecting, training, and supervising ESL/foreign language peer tutors; assessing the oral English proficiency of prospective international teaching assistants; and teaching course(s) which address English language proficiency and American classroom practices for international teaching assistants at UMBC. The incumbent will also be responsible for coordinating the Freshman Year Intervention Program (FYI). This program is a major part of the campus-wide retention program designed to help new freshmen whose performance by mid-semester indicates that they need additional academic support. With regard to this program, the incumbent will: identify, with input from UMBC faculty, new freshmen who at mid-semester are in academic difficulty; notify these freshmen of their poor performance by a letter that also lists support services on campus; notify campus support programs that these new freshmen need assistance; maintain accurate records; and report the result of the intervention to the UMBC administration. The incumbent will also teach student success courses and/or skill building courses. In addition, the incumbent will perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Requires: a Master's degree in TESOL, Bi-lingual Education, Applied Linguistics or a related field and at least five years experience teaching in post secondary and/or secondary-level ESL and/or foreign language. Post-secondary teaching experience is preferred in ESL, foreign languages, and/or student success courses. Experience hiring, training, and supervising peer tutors and proficiency with more than one language is a plus. Multi-media, database, and Microsoft Office skills and a collegial working style are strongly preferred. Position is full-time and includes full university benefits package.
