Developmental Education Math Instructor

Salary:   $36,212-$42,014 (additional degrees and experience increase rate)

Duties/Responsibilities:

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Whatcom Community College invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position beginning Fall Quarter 2008 in the developmental education program that promotes student success and persistence in Developmental Math. College faculty teach an equivalent of 15 credits per quarter and participate in institutional governance. The faculty member will teach developmental arithmetic through pre-algebra. Whatcom Community College seeks faculty who can adapt to a variety of teaching situations, who are dedicated to student success, effective teaching, and who can demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students, colleagues, staff, and the community in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and global understanding.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Teach developmental math courses (developmental arithmetic through pre-algebra).

Provide leadership and collaboration with colleagues and serve as liaison to create smooth transitions for students among ABE, Developmental Education, and College-level Math programs.

Stay current in the fields of developmental education, mathematics teaching, and higher education.

Design and implement varied instructional activities (e.g., lectures, discussions, one-to-one instruction, demonstrations, research techniques) that reflect current pedagogic theories and methodologies and technology appropriate to the specific needs of a developmental education classroom population.

Evaluate student achievement of identified learning objectives.

Work with colleagues to evaluate, review, and revise learning outcomes and program curriculum to improve student success and advancement.

Coordinate teaching duties and responsibilities with other developmental education personnel (and those in other adult education programs) in both the Mathematics and English instruction areas to achieve a more integrated and effective curriculum.

Assist students making the transitions to college to claim responsibility for their learning and to behave and think in ways that make them part of the academic, scholarly community.

Provide strong advocacy for student success.

Collaborate with the Math Center Coordinator to provide consistent developmental education student support and tutor training.

Work in close collaboration with student services and advising.

Serve on college committees and participate in departmental and institutional governance and service.

All other related duties as required.

Qualifications: 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1A. Master's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or related field.

a minimum of two years of successful full-time or equivalent part-time developmental math teaching experience in higher education or secondary setting.

OR

1B. A Master's degree in Developmental Education with undergraduate degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education.

a minimum of two years of successful full-time or equivalent part-time developmental math teaching experience in higher education or secondary setting.

Documented skill in teaching developmental mathematics in a college or secondary setting.

Experience with curriculum development and revisions.

Excellent collaboration and communication skills as demonstrated in oral, written, and team settings.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Possess a strong understanding of developmental education student needs and of the various difficulties they experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with non-traditional teaching methods and collaborative learning.

Experience in teaching developmental students and underprepared/academically at-risk students.

A desire and ability to inspire diverse student populations to enjoy learning math and to achieve their highest potential.

Preference given to recent community college teaching experience in pre-collegiate mathematical curricula.
