ALIGNMENT WITH GEORGIA PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

At almost every grade level there are Social Studies (History, Geography, Economics and Government) standards to which a visit to the Oak Grove One-Room Schoolhouse could link. In addition, some of the suggested reading, research and writing activities also correlate to Reading and Writing GPS. Below is a list of the standards which might be used. Because some standards appear in more than one grade level, repeats have not been included.

 

SOCIAL STUDIES

SS1H1 The student will read about and describe the life of historical figures in American history.

SS2H1 The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures in Georgia history.

SS2CG1 The student will define the concept of government and the need for rules and laws.

SS2CG2 The student will identify the roles of the following elected officials: presidents, governors, mayors.

SS3H2 The student will discuss the lives of Americans who expanded people's rights and freedoms in a democracy.

SS4CG3 The student will describe the functions of government.

SS4CG4 The student will explain the importance of Americans sharing certain central democratic beliefs and principles, both personal and civic.

SS5H3 The student will describe how life changed in America at the turn of the century.

SS5H4 The student will describe U.S. involvement in World War I and post- World War I America .

SS5H5 The student will explain how the Great Depression and New Deal affected the lives of millions of Americans.

SS5E1 The student will use the basic economic concepts of trade, opportunity cost, specialization, voluntary exchange, productivity, and price incentives to illustrate historical events.

SS8H7 The student will evaluate key political, social, and economic changes that occurred in Georgia between 1877 and 1918.

SS8H8 The student will analyze the important events that occurred after World War I and their impact on Georgia .

SS8CG5 The student will analyze the role of local governments in the state of Georgia .

SSUSH6 The student will analyze the nature of territorial and population growth and the impact of this growth in the early decades of the new nation.

SSUSH14 The student will explain America 's evolving relationship with the world at the turn of the twentieth century.

SSUSH15 The student will analyze the origins and impact of U.S. involvement in World War I.

SSUSH16 The student will identify key developments in the aftermath of WW I.

SSUSH17 The student will analyze the causes and consequences of the Great Depression.

SSUSH18 The student will describe Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal as a response to the depression and compare the ways governmental programs aided those in need.

SSKG2 The student will explain that a map is a drawing of a place and a globe is a model of the earth.

 

READING

ELA5R1 The student demonstrates comprehension and shows evidence of a warranted and responsible explanation of a variety of literary and informational texts.

ELA5R2 The student consistently reads at least twenty-five books or book equivalents (approximately 1,000,000 words) each year. The materials should include traditional and contemporary literature (both fiction and non-fiction) as well as magazines, newspapers, textbooks, and electronic material. Such reading should represent a diverse collection of material from at least three different literary forms and from at least five different writers.

ELA5R3 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing.

ELA5R4 The student reads aloud, accurately (in the range of 95%), familiar material in a variety of genres, in a way that makes meaning clear to listeners.

ELA8RC2 The student participates in discussions related to curricular learning in all subject areas.

ELA8RC4 The student establishes a context for information acquired by reading across subject areas.

ELA9RL3 The student deepens understanding of literary works by relating them to contemporary context or historical background.

In addition there is a Reading Across the Curriculum strand in almost every subject in every grade.

 

WRITING

ELA5W1 The student produces writing that establishes an appropriate organizational structure, sets a context and engages the reader, maintains a coherent focus throughout, and signals a satisfying closure.

ELA5W2 The student demonstrates competence in a variety of genres.

ELA5W3 The student uses research and technology to support writing.

ELA5W4 The student consistently uses a writing process to develop, revise, and evaluate writing.

ELA5W3 The student uses research and technology to support writing.
