College of Education

ON SITE ACTIVITIES

(1) Divide class into teams and have a scavenger hunt for the resources that you listed in activity #2 of "Before Your Visit". Gather back together and discuss what was unavailable and possible alternatives (slates, blackboards, textbooks, desks, pens, pencils, recitation bench, wood burning stove, abacas, well water, and outhouse).

(2) Draw a “map” of the classroom floor plan for comparison to your school “map”.

(3) Experience a grade-appropriate math or grammar lesson using only items that were available. For example, you could:

a. Practice a subtraction lesson using the abacas

b. Identify parts of speech using slates and chalk

(4) Eat a “pail” lunch. Plan ahead for no refrigeration and please carry off your own trash. If you wish to be authentic, a typical southern lunch might be cold sweet potatoes or a sausage and a biscuit.

(5) Drink from the well. Since there is only a common dipper, you will need to bring your own cups.

(6) Examine books, photographs, “rock” candy, dunce hat, paddle and other items of the period that are on display. Please handle carefully.
