Applying for Student Teaching

MEMORANDUM TO PROSPECTIVE STUDENT TEACHERS
From: Pat Parsons, Director of Field Experiences and Partnerships

The student teaching application process is especially important. Ultimately, it will result in your student teaching assignment. Several forms are a part of the procedure. This page offers an overview of each form and links to each one.

Significant dates are identified. Print out the dates page for future reference.

You are very close to entering the teaching profession. The student teaching application that you will be completing is a significant next step. Be thoughtful and specific as you work with the necessary forms. All forms will be transmitted electronically.

The forms are:

  1. Student Teaching Application
This form initiates the process that will result in your assignment to a school. Respond thoughtfully to each item.
  2. Mail Center Form
Information from this form will be transferred to the Campus Postal Service. The information you provide will specify the location for receipt of your mail during student teaching.
  3. Liability Insurance Form
To student teach, you must have $1,000,000 tort liability insurance. Joining a student professional organization may be one option for obtaining this insurance. Two that are open to you are SGAE and SPAGE. Both groups have faculty representatives located in the COE Building. The SGAE representative is Denise Weems in Room 4114. SPAGE forms may be obtained in the Student Success Center, Room 1107J.
  4. Autobiographical Sketch
This form represents an opportunity for you to describe your background, motivation to teach, and dreams about your future to your prospective Clinical Supervisor, Principal, Clinical Associate, and University Supervisor. First impressions are often lasting impressions.
The quality of this paper is paramount. Develop this paper with careful thought and in keeping with rules of grammar. The expected length is to be between 300 - 400 words. Papers which do not meet the expected minimum length, that contain grammatical errors, or are judged to be of poor quality will be returned to you for resubmission. Please note that this may cause a delay in securing your placement. There are two topics for consideration in developing the paper. One aspect is information about your growth and development as an individual. You may choose to include personal aspects such as family information, academic experiences, special interests, etc... A second element deals with teaching. This may include discussion of why you chose teaching, as well as a description of the teacher you aspire to be.
  5. *VERY IMPORTANT: THE REQUIRED FOUR FORMS MUST BE TRANSMITTED ON THE SAME DATE SO THEY ARE RECEIVED TOGETHER. IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO COMPLETE THE FORMS IN ONE SITTING, YOU WILL HAVE TO BEGIN AGAIN. EXPECT TO TAKE ABOUT 30 MINUTES TO COMPLETE THE FORMS.

  6. Criminal Background Check
Complete background check by the deadline to apply to student teach. Background check must be completed on line at www.CertifiedBackground.com

    .
