Professional Learning Units (PLU)

To offer PLU credit for a Georgia Southern workshop, conference, or course, approval must be obtained from the College of Education and the Georgia Department of Education. A Workshop form and PLU Plan should be submitted at least two months prior to the beginning date of the workshop/conference/course to allow adequate time for obtaining approval.

Use the following guidelines to determine how many PLUs can be offered:

10 actual clock hours of instruction equals 1 PLU. (Instruction contact hours can not count registration time, lunches, breaks, completing evaluations, etc.)
A maximum of 8 clock hours of instruction can be offered on one day
A maximum of 4 PLUs can be offered per week
Contact hours can not include activities required for on-the-job assessment or mastery verification, or for non-class time to develop or produce class assignments. If mastery verification is chosen as your manner of assessment, be sure to build in enough time in your workshop for the assessment in addition to the required hours of instruction.

If a graduate credit course is simultaneously offered to in-service teachers for PLU credit:

The PLU students must apply for admission to the University using the Professional Learning Unit (PLU) Application Form (This form is used only when course is offered for graduate credit and PLU credit simultaneously.)
The PLU students must complete all of the requirements and assessments that the Graduate Credit students are required to complete.
The PLU students will be charged at a rate of 50% of the graduate tuition for the course. PLU students will be billed by the Division of Continuing Education.
