Secondary education degree at Georgia Southern
Georgia Southern’s bachelor’s degree in secondary education will not only teach you the skills you’ll need to manage a classroom, plan a curriculum and engage your student, it will also give you practical hands-on training in area middle and high schools, where you can learn to apply your skills first hand and get career-ready before graduation.
Our program will allow you to choose a specific emphasis area from the following academic subjects: Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics and Physics. Please note some program courses in the English and History Emphasis areas are only offered on the Armstrong Campus. Some program courses in the Physics Emphasis area are only offered on the Statesboro Campus.
Advising
All B.S.Ed. Secondary Education majors are assigned to a professional advisor in the College of Education (COE) Advisement Center for program planning and course scheduling. Program Format
Our program offers innovative approaches to student learning such as year-long residency. Completed with a partner school during your senior year, yearlong residency often allows you to work with the same teacher who will serve as your mentor in the field. School partners participating in yearlong residency have provided positive feedback, saying that student teachers gain valuable experience by becoming more integrated into the school. All field experiences, including student teaching, take place within a 70 mile radius of the Georgia Southern campus. Explore more of the program outcomes.
Certification and beyond
Successful graduation from our secondary education program will lead to an initial certification in secondary education (grades 6-12). Upon successful completion of the Secondary Education B.S.Ed. Certification Track program and passing the Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE) content exams in secondary education, and the Educators Ethics Exit 360, you will qualify for a Georgia level 4 Induction certificate upon employment as a teacher.

Admission Information
The Georgia Southern University Office of Undergraduate Admissions oversees the application process for undergraduate students. During the admission process, During the admission process, ALL students interested in either the single certification secondary education program must declare the Secondary Education B.S.Ed. Professional Studies (Non Certification Track) as their intended major. When accepted to the university, ALL undergraduate education majors are admitted into the Secondary Education B.S.Ed. Professional Studies (Non Certification Track) program. Admission to the Secondary Education B.S.Ed. program will be structured into annual cohorts beginning each fall semester. At the completion of all courses, through area F in the program of study, students seeking initial teacher certification would then apply to the Teacher Education Program. (See admission requirements for admission into the Teacher Education Program). If accepted into the Teacher Education Program, the student would move into the Secondary Education B.S.Ed. Certification program in either the single certification or dual certification track. Those students who are NOT seeking initial teacher certification, would complete the remainder of the program requirements for the Secondary Education B.S.Ed. Professional Studies (Non-Certification Track) program.

Professional License/Certification Disclosure
The Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education anticipates that graduates of the BSED Secondary Education (6-12) will be eligible to seek professional certification by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission as a certified teacher in their respective fields.
The Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education has determined the required classes and educational activities of these academic programs will qualify a graduate of this program to take the GACE exam for teacher certification in Georgia. The department has not determined whether these programs satisfy the requirements of all states and territories for teacher certification in Secondary Education.
