Badging

coe_institute-for-interdisciplinary-stem-educationSTEM Badging Program designed to target the call by the STEM Certification Program that 100% of STEM teachers have on-going STEM specific professional learning. The STEM Endorsement Badging Program would target the need for such professional development for schools, be offered 100% on line (no travel), and be available for Elementary, Middle, and High Schools. The goal is to provide teachers in existing STEM certified schools, or schools seeking certification, or schools who want to offer PD for teachers, access to a digital badging system allowing for any time, any place, any pace instruction in the 17 identified STEM program certification competencies.

 

Foundations

As a two part course, teachers have to complete competency-based, job-embedded tasks to verify ability to implement authentic teaching in their classrooms. Tasks include development of personal philosophy of interdisciplinary STEM education, identifying community experts, developing and implementing a STEM lesson plan, reflective critique of implementation of STEM lesson, and school level strategic plan to implement STEM program.

Authentic Teaching & Learning

As a two part course, teachers have to complete competency-based, job-embedded tasks to verify ability to implement authentic teaching in their classrooms. Tasks include development of authentic teaching lesson, creation of a personal narrative of authentic teaching, video clips providing evidence of authentic teaching in the teacher’s classroom, provide a personal philosophy of authentic teaching and learning, implement a project-based learning project, and create a list of potential projects.

Collaborative

The module consists of direct interaction in a series of job-embedded, competency-based tasks, culminating in performance tasks that provide evidence of mastery of establishing STEM Collaboratives and demonstration of ability to apply and implement the tenants of interdisciplinary STEM in the teacher’s classroom. Participation requires one hour of individual and one hour of professional learning community interaction for each hour of direct contact.

Reasoning

Teachers have to complete competency-based, job-embedded tasks to verify ability to implement authentic teaching in their classrooms Tasks include developing and implementing tasks that elicit at least 2 of the 5 reasoning abilities: complex systems reasoning, science model-based reasoning, technology computational reasoning, engineering design-reasoning, and mathematics quantitative reasoning.
