TEC serves as Georgia Southern University's "functional unit," for educator preparation as defined by the Board of Regents. This body has the "responsibility for teacher preparation vested in a collaborative of education, arts and sciences, and (public) school faculty." The functional unit must have "equitable representation, responsibility, and authority for the preparation of teachers among education, arts and science, and school partners, and other academic units as appropriate." The TEC model reflects the necessary connectedness between TEC and standing curriculum committees in the College of Education and in other colleges on campus as curriculum and related program matters are decided. The need for shared responsibility in educator preparation programs has been valued over the years, and TEC facilitates shared decision-making and improved communication. TEC includes three operational structures: College TEC Committees, the TEC Executive Committee, and "Full" TEC.
TEC consists of four college-based committees, each with faculty representation from the host college's departments that are involved in teacher preparation and the College of Education. [To allow for broader faculty involvement, faculty who serve on college or university curriculum committees should not also represent their programs on the College TEC Committees. For committee structure see: College TEC Committee Memberships and Membership] On each of the College TEC Committees, P-12 teachers from the related teaching disciplines are invited to serve. Associate Deans from the host college and the College of Education serve as ex officio members and facilitate the work across the 4 committees. The role of the College TEC Committees is to make recommendations regarding: (a) new or revised course/s taken by candidates in initial and/or advanced education certification programs (b) new or revised program/s in educator preparation (c) policy/procedural change related to educator preparation programs (d) other as needed.
The TEC Executive Committee Executive Committee consists of the faculty chair of each College TEC Committee (4 chairs), associate deans, the COE Certification Officer, and a representative from the office of the Provost. The Chair of the Executive Committee is elected by the Executive Committee and is also chair of Full TEC. The TEC Executive Committee:
