i2STEMe joins the College of Education

Open house reception slated for September 27, 2-5 p.m.

This summer, the College of Education (COE) welcomed the Institute for Interdisciplinary STEM Education (i2STEMe) as a new outreach center for the College. Effective July 1, the Institute moved under the College’s organizational structure and relocated their administrative offices to the COE’s classroom building, room 3161.

“This move will allow i2STEMe to better serve all the faculty of Georgia Southern University by strengthening the connection between education and STEM content faculty, providing expertise in broadening impacts and serving as a resource for faculty interested in STEM education,” said Institute Coordinator Kania Greer, Ed.D.

The mission of i2STEMe is to provide professional development, engage in community outreach and seek external funding to promote STEM teaching and learning in both formal and informal educational settings. The Institute hosts many annual events including summer camps, STEMFest and the Interdisciplinary STEM Teaching and Learning Conference.

“The continued goals of the Institute include a focus on providing customized professional development to school districts, supporting faculty seeking external funding, facilitating partnerships across colleges and across the state and providing opportunities for faculty to participate in scholarly activity through conferences,” said Greer.

“We are excited to have the Institute of Interdisciplinary STEM Education join us in the College of Education,” said COE Professor and Associate Dean of Graduate Education and Research Tracy Linderholm, Ph.D. “The move will allow us to offer a wider array of services to meet the needs of area schools and the community.”

The Institute will host a drop-in open house reception in their new location (COE 3161) on Wednesday, September 27 from 2-5 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

“We hope that members of the campus and community will join us for our open house event to see our newly renovated location and to learn more about what the Institute has to offer you–whether you are a University faculty member or a classroom teacher,” said Greer.

About the Institute

The Institute of Interdisciplinary STEM Education was founded in 2012 with the guidance of College of Education’s Robert Mayes, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning. Together, Mayes, Linderholm and Karin Scarpinato, a former associate dean of the College of Science and Mathematics (COSM), proposed a university-wide program to promote STEM education across campus with support from COE Dean Thomas Koballa, Ph.D., and upper administration. All seven colleges at the University participated in the development and implementation of i2STEMe.

The Institute currently consists of two teams members, Greer and Lisa Stueve, Ed.D.

Greer, a Quadruple Eagle alumna, completed a bachelor’s in psychology, master’s in community counseling, specialist in school counseling and doctorate in educational leadership, all from Georgia Southern University. She joined the Institute in 2012 as the project development specialist and focused efforts on establishing partnerships within campus and the broader community to improve STEM learning in both P-12 and higher education settings. Greer was named coordinator summer 2017.

Stueve serves as the outreach specialist for i2STEMe. A previous school administrator with more than 23 years of experience in teaching and high school leadership, Stueve joined the Institute in 2015. Her responsibilities include connecting the Institute with the community and surrounding districts as well as coordinating professional development and outreach programs and events. Stueve completed her master and specialist degrees in mathematics education and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Georgia.
