MAT Transcript Evaluation

All MAT concentrations require applicants to have an overall GPA of 2.50 or higher. Overall GPA is calculated with all grades earned from all institutions, even excluded grades on transcripts. Applicants are encouraged to use GPA calculators found online to calculate their overall GPA if there are any concerns about meeting the overall GPA requirement. All MAT concentrations require applicants to have a content GPA of 2.75. The content GPA is calculated from the specific content related courses.

Applicants interested in the MAT in Middle Grades will need to satisfy at least 15 credit hours of prerequisite content coursework in one of the following areas: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Science. Content requirements for each area are listed below, but some substitutions may be allowed. The required GPA for each content area must be at least 2.75 and the overall GPA from all coursework attempted must be 2.50 or higher.

Candidates must meet content requirements for one content area:

Language Arts: At least 15 credit hours in fields including English, Writing, or Reading. Content GPA must be at least 2.75.

Mathematics: At least 15 credit hours in Math including the following courses as prerequisite courses: College Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, and Pre-Calculus or Calculus. Content GPA must be at least 2.75.

Science: At least 15 credit hours in fields including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Geology. Must include courses from at least two of the above fields and at least two lab sciences. Content GPA must be at least 2.75.

Social Science: At least 15 credit hours in fields including History, Political Science, Economics, and Geography. Content GPA must be at least 2.75.

Applicants interested in the MAT in Biology Education satisfy all content required if they hold a degree in Biology.  Biology content courses’ GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.

If the applicant holds a degree in another field, but wishes to become certified in Biology, 21 semester hours in Biology are required including the following courses as prerequisite courses: Principles of Biology I (with lab), Principles of Biology II (with lab), Evolution and Ecology, Principles of Genetics, Environmental Biology, Microbiology, and Botany.  Substitutions may be allowed and will be considered during the evaluation process.

Applicants interested in the MAT in Chemistry Education satisfy all content required if they hold a degree in Chemistry. Chemistry content courses’ GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.

If the applicant holds a degree in another field, but wishes to become certified in Chemistry, 21 semester hours in Chemistry are required including the following courses as prerequisite courses: Principles of Chemistry I (with lab), Principles of Chemistry II (with lab), Organic Chemistry I (with lab), Organic Chemistry II (with lab), Biochemistry I, and Principles of Chemistry Research. Substitutions may be allowed and will be considered during the evaluation process.

Applicants interested in the MAT in Physics Education satisfy all content required if they hold a degree in Physics. Physics content courses’ GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.

If the applicant holds a degree in another field, but wishes to become certified in Physics, 21 semester hours in Physics are required including the following courses as prerequisite courses: Principles of Physics I (with lab), Principles of Physics II (with lab), Modern Physics I, Modern Physics II, and an Advanced Lab Course in Physics. Substitutions may be allowed and will be considered during the evaluation process.

Applicants interested in the MAT in Broad Field Science Education satisfy all content required if they hold a degree in a science field such as biology, chemistry, environmental science, geology, or physics, plus an additional 15 credit hours in two other science fields such as biology, chemistry, environmental science, geology, or physics. Science content courses’ GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.

Applicants interested in the MAT in History Education satisfy all content required if they hold a degree in History. History content courses GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.

If the applicant holds a degree in another field, but wishes to become certified in History, 21 semester hours (12 upper division) in History are required.

Applicants interested in the MAT in Geography Education satisfy all content required if they hold a degree in Geography. Geography content courses’ GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.

If the applicant holds a degree in another field, but wishes to become certified in Geography, 21 semester hours (12 upper division) in Geography are required.

Applicants interested in the MAT in Political Science Education satisfy all content required if they hold a degree in Political Science. Political Science content courses’ GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.

If the applicant holds a degree in another field, but wishes to become certified in Political Science, 21 semester hours (12 upper division) in Political Science are required.

Applicants interested in the MAT in Economics Education satisfy all content required if they hold a degree in Economics. Economics content courses’ GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.

If the applicant holds a degree in another field, but wishes to become certified in Economics, 21 semester hours (12 upper division) in Economics are required.

Applicants interested in the MAT in English Education satisfy all content required if they hold a degree in English. English content courses’ GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.

If the applicant holds a degree in another field, but wishes to become certified in English, 21 semester hours (12 upper division) in English are required.

Applicants interested in the MAT in Mathematics Education satisfy all content required if they hold a degree in Mathematics. Mathematics content courses’ GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.

If the applicant holds a degree in another field, but wishes to become certified in Mathematics, 21 semester hours in Mathematics are required including the following courses as prerequisite courses: Calculus I, Calculus II, Calculus III, Linear Algebra, College Geometry, History of Mathematics, Number Theory, and Statistics/Probability.

Applicants interested in the MAT in Spanish Education can satisfy content requirements in one of three ways:

1) Candidates meet content requirements if they hold a degree in Spanish. Content GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.

2) Candidates meet content requirements if they hold a degree in a field other than Spanish, but have 21 semester credit hours (of which at least 12 credit hours must be 3000-level and above) in SPAN (Spanish) content courses. Content GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.

3) Candidates who hold a degree in another field with an overall GPA (all courses taken) of at least 2.50 but do not meet the above transcript criteria may pass an Oral Proficiency Interview and a Writing Proficiency Test in Spanish at the ACTFL-defined IH or above (tests administered by the Department of World Languages and Cultures). Applicants interested in Special Education must satisfy a 15 semester hour content block in one of the following areas: language arts, mathematics, reading, science or social science for those who anticipate teaching at the elementary and middle grades level. Applicants who anticipate teaching at the high school level will have additional certification requirements which include 21 semester hours of upper division content in the one of the areas in: language arts, mathematics, reading, science or social science. Content GPA must be 2.75 and overall GPA (all courses taken) must be 2.50 or higher.
