Adult education is the transfer of knowledge and skills to adults through the facilitation of learning or training. Georgia Southern is one of the very few institutions of higher education that offers this degree, which prepares you for a wide variety of career opportunities, making it a popular and sought-after choice for individuals seeking advancement in many adult education, community and corporate settings.

The Master of Education in Adult Education degree prepares graduates to effectively transmit knowledge and skills to adults and become an educational leader in their current field and community, while enhancing existing skills and acquiring new knowledge in the area of human resource development.  While building upon existing expertise successful completion of this program, participants are moved toward advancement in many education, community, and corporate settings.

Graduates of this program will go on to use their education in a variety of settings. Adult educators may direct programs or teach adults in formal and informal adult education centers, technical colleges, correctional facilities, social service agencies and business, institutional or corporate settings. Adult educators are not required to be certified and this degree does not lead to certification to teach in Georgia P-12 public schools.

Because information and technology are being created at such fast rates, employees are finding that they must remain in continual learning mode in order to have the necessary skills to successfully complete their jobs. Therefore, it is important that trainers and educators are prepared to effectively transmit their knowledge to others.

Program Outcomes

This program of study will require students to accomplish the following objectives:

  • Develop a deeper, comprehensive understanding of the adult learner through a plan of study which builds upon prior professional preparation and experience.
  • Interpret adult behavior through exploration of theories and research findings related to the physical, social, emotional, intellectual and moral development of the adult learner.
  • Investigate historical and philosophical factors which influence curriculum and pedagogy/andragogy for the adult learner.
  • Plan and facilitate lessons that elevate their learners’ subject matter knowledge and skills.
  • Implement developmentally responsive practices that reflect the philosophical foundations of adult education.
  • Employ best practices in the use of assessment, using a variety of strategies to meet the varying abilities and learning styles of all learners.
  • Implement appropriate instructional strategies designed according to learner variables and academic discipline.
  • Understand the importance of working collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Engage in practices and behaviors that develop competence as professionals.

Courses and Requirements

Format: Blended Program

The program of study consists of 10 required courses totaling 30 semester hours.  Courses are offered as hybrid, with part of each online and part on-campus. Not all courses are offered every semester.
