M.A.T. Elementary Education
*The name of this program will change to M.A.T. Elementary Education effective August 2018*
Can I complete the concentration online?
Yes, the MAT’s Elementary Education program is offered as an online program or a hybrid program option on the Georgia Southern University Armstrong Campus beginning summer 2019. The application process for the new summer 2019 cohort will begin fall 2018.
What background do I need?
This study concentration is for candidates who already hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and who are interested in a career as a teacher of young children. The M.A.T. provides an option for people entering the world of teaching from other vocations or fields of study, and is also an option for those who are already in the classroom yet have not obtained initial certification (e.g. paraprofessionals, Teach for America, etc.). Through a sequence of courses and related field experiences, candidates will be prepared to teach young children in preschool through grade five. The program of study is designed to meet all content and methods requirements for initial certification.
During the program, you will be required to complete a supervised field experience in Georgia schools to meet certification requirements. (Some concentrations require practicum placements prior to the student teaching or internship semester) The public school sites for student teaching or internships must be within a seventy (70) mile radius of Georgia Southern. An exception is made for students in the online MAT in Special Education and the MAT in Elementary Education; your placement will be considered in the region in which you live.
What certification will I be eligible for upon completion of this concentration?
Successful completion of the M.A.T. and passing scores on the appropriate GACE Content Assessments and edTPA will lead to eligibility for T-5 level certification.
