APS Experience

Atlanta Public Schools (APS) brought 94 middle and high school students from their gifted and talented program to Georgia Southern University on Friday March 25th for our inaugural STEM field experience.  The experience provided opportunities relating to STEM post secondary education opportunities and STEM careers in each of the Universities seven colleges.  The experiences were designed to Expose Atlanta Public School middle grades students in the Gifted and Talented program to STEM college and career opportunities at Georgia Southern University,  and included demonstration labs, facilities tours and interactive experiences hosted by the Institute for Interdisciplinary STEM Education Affiliate Faculty and their graduate assistants.  We are hopeful that the experience will: support STEM Career engagement for students; encourage Georgia’s best and brightest to pursue in-state college opportunities; expose young scholar’s to STEM industry standards and best practices through practical application models.  It is the intention of the Institute to pursue replicating this project annually and potentially even more frequently based on the feedback from students, teachers and administrators from APS. View a snapshot of the day here, courtesy of Jeremy Wilburn.
